What's Eating LAUSD?

An opinion piece from the Los Angeles Times tackles the subject of the future of the school district.

An excerpt:

The No Child Left Behind standardized test treats students of color as inferior, not good enough. The test marginalizes non-English speaking cultures. It makes students feel as if their culture isn't good enough because they must change or hide their culture to learn English so they can pass these tests. Students who come into this world learning English as a second language have their intelligence silenced.

STAR Results Announced

Elementary school test scores in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) continue to steadily improve in English Language Arts, mathematics and science, while the academic performance of middle and senior high school students remains mixed, according to 2007 Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) results released Wednesday, August 15, by the California Department of Education. LAUSD Superintendent Calls for "Cultural Revolution"

With traditional schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) scheduled to open on Wednesday, September 5, Los Angeles Superintendent David L. Brewer III spoke to members of the Los Angeles Board of Education, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell and nearly 2,000 LAUSD principals, assistant principals and District administrators at the 2007 Superintendent’s Annual Meeting. During his address, the Superintendent discussed recent District achievements, his vision for transforming the District, its challenges and his plans to make the District a data-driven organization. School Back in September 5!

Summer is just about over and school will begin again on September 5th. New PTA president Judy Cohen, along with Vice Pres Myrtle Keefe will be on hand to help with any questions new parents may have (or old parents for that matter!) If you don't know them, they will be wearing name tags.
