Wonderland Avenue Elementary’s Edible, Organic Garden
We need supplies to keep our gardening curriculum growing! Please click here to see what you can donate.
Not too long ago, one mom asked her son where tomatoes came from. Without hesitation, he replied, “Produce aisle at Ralph’s, Mom. Duh.” Thus, our impetus was born; to create an educational program for Wonderland kids which focuses on fresh organic produce. To create a place where they can learn and experience the wonders of nature firsthand – literally “from the ground up”.
Our Alice Waters’-inspired goal is to educate children about healthier eating and choosing the right food to put into their growing bodies. And once the magic wins out over the junk, we hope they’ll be converted for life.
As part of small groups, every child at Wonderland will experience the wonders of the garden through
special projects that involve every aspect of gardening. Inherent in planting, weeding, cultivating and harvesting are millions of teaching opportunities that can be correlated to every subject: math, science, health, art, history, language arts, etc. Our edible garden gives something to everyone - and makes us all realize that we all need to slow down and stay close to the bounties nature offers us all.
Please contact the following “From the Ground Up” chairpersons for more info or to volunteer. We encourage all gardeners, non-gardeners, foodies, health nuts or any combination to help get this amazing project off the ground and into the hearts, minds and tummies of our kids.
A votre sante!
