Referred to as the “home school” by the Wonderland community, Wonderland Avenue Elementary School’s neighborhood school program is for residents of the Laurel Canyon community. The school is built on the belief that there are many different types of intelligence.
Dedicated teachers and heavily involved parents strive to create a supportive learning environment by recognizing and supporting those different types of intelligence in each student. We work to challenge all students past the point where their existing knowledge ends… and to where new learning begins.
Our curriculum is multi-disciplinary, but integrates language arts into every discipline. It also emphasizes the fine arts, music, literature, drama and dance, which we consider to be as important and necessary as the traditional “basics.” We ensure that our students attain a reasonable level of accomplishment before moving them from one phase of the curriculum to the next.
The Home School curriculum focuses on ensuring that its students are able to:
- Listen, speak, write, do mathematics
- Use technology
- Apply what they’ve learned
- Develop a healthy self-esteem
- Use critical thinking skills
- Find, evaluate and use information
- Participate readily in the Wonderland community
- Demonstrate responsibility
- Be self-directed learners
- Adapt effectively to change
- Acquire a positive work ethic
- Practice good health and fitness habits
To register your child at Wonderland Avenue School you need to present:
Identification: Birth certificate, baptismal certificate, passport or other legal document that has your child’s birth date.
Immunization Record Card: Children must be current with all shots. Those entering school for the first time, such as kindergartners or children from another country or state, must have the Mantoux skin test.
Proof of residency within the school boundaries (Home School only): A rental agreement, utility bill (no phone bills), or property tax bill.
Any new students who previously attended an LAUSD school need to obtain the PAR (Pupil Accounting Report) from the previous school so the enrollment can be handled through the computer.
