Magnet School

Wonderland Magnet School’s dedicated teaching staff ensures children recognized as gifted/high ability are challenged while at school.

Magnet enrollment is done through a selection process which begins with submitting the application from the Choices Brochure. THE APPLICATION DEADLINE IS DECEMBER 18, 2009. Make sure you obtain a Magnet Choices brochure and begin accumulating points early because points, more than anything else, will help you get into a Magnet program at any school.

LAUSD students receive the Choices brochure by mail and are automatically verified through school records. Parents should refer to the brochure to make sure students meet the qualifying criteria.

CRITERIA – REVISED JULY 2007 to include the California Standards Test scaled scores.

Gifted/High Ability Program: Verified by the school of attendance as meeting one of the following three criteria:

(1) Demonstrate ability in all four critical-thinking and problem-solving skills in their primary language.

  • Explain meanings or relationships among facts, information, or concepts that demonstrate depth and complexity.
  • Formulate new ideas or solutions and elaborate on the information.
  • Use alternative methods in approaching new or unfamiliar mathematical problems.
  • Use extensive vocabulary easily and accurately to express creative ideas.

(2) – Percentile scores of 78 or above in total reading total mathematics on standardized norm-reference tests; or

— Scaled scores on the California Standards Test (CST) as follows:

  • A scaled score of 425 or above in English-Language Arts, grades 2-11 and
  • A scaled score of 450 or above in mathematics, grades 2-7 or
  • A scaled score of 450 or above for grades 8 and above in one of the following math content courses: Algebra I or II; Geometry; Integrated Math I, II or III; High School Summative Math.

(3) Identification as gifted in any of the categories by an LAUSD school psychologist.

For those students not enrolled in LAUSD, it is the parent’s responsibility to obtain the Choices brochure from the resident school, refer to page 8, and follow the instructions which are as follows:

  • Contact the school of attendance to give authorization to release student information.
  • Contact the Gifted/Talented Programs office at (213) 241-6500 to request that a student “verification form” be sent to the current school of attendance. (Have school address, telephone number, teacher’s and principal’s names ready.)
  • Make sure that the “verification form” is returned from the school of attendance to the Gifted/Talented Programs office prior to the December 18th deadline.
  • Mail the application in the envelope provided.

Students selected by the District Integration Office will receive a letter in the spring informing them of their acceptance.

Any new students who previously attended an LAUSD school need to obtain the PAR (Pupil Accounting Report) from the previous school so the enrollment can be handled through the computer.
